Physical Activity and Benefits

What is Physical Activity?

Physical activity refers to “all leisure and non leisure body movements resulting in an increase energy output from rest. However, it is important to note that there are four broad Physical Activity domains; occupational (work related), domestic (housework or childcare), transportation (bicycling or working), and leisure time (recreation time, sport and exercise)” (Bouchard & Katzmarzyk 2010).

Examples of ways you can improve physical activity after school:
  • Playing with your pet
  • A nice stroll around the neighbourhood
  • Doing some yard work
  • Going to the beach and walking around on a pier
  • Dancing to some of your favourite music

Some questions you can ask yourself or talk to the class about would be:
Can you give some examples of physical activity that other people will not usually do?
What kinds of physical activity do you enjoy? and why?
